Koshambh: Your Trusted Herbicide Exporter from India
Proper weed management and thorough control of their growth will remain the bedrock that is needed to sustain crop yields and maintain food security, thereby promoting agricultural growth. Weeds compete with the crops for essential nutrients, water, and sunlight and thus have considerable impacts on the reduction in agricultural productivity. This is where herbicides come in to cover those gaps.
Understanding Herbicides
Herbicides are chemicals designed to selectively kill unwanted plants, commonly referred to as weeds. When incorporated within the crop management practices, they can greatly help in reducing the growth of weeds, allowing the crops to get the essential nutrients and thereby leading to much healthier crop yields. The main advantage of herbicide use is that it makes weeding much less labor-intensive and economic in terms of farm resource use. Not only this, herbicides also promote soil conservation because mechanical tillage usually results in soil erosion. Herbicides are thus a necessary means within the progression of modern agriculture, if farmers want to ensure that crops are planted in a clean and productive field.
India’s Prominence as a Herbicides Exporter
The herbicide exports have shown India’s contribution to the modern agrochemical sector; it accounted for $3.925 billion in exports in 2024. Shortly, the herbicide market is anticipated to undergo a positive evolution, making a shift towards targeted and ecologically sound solutions. Glyphosate 360, 480
A non-selective systemic herbicide that provides effective control of virtually all annual and perennial weeds. Glyphosate blocks the EPSP synthase enzyme, a critical factor for plant growth, thus killing unwanted vegetation.
Formulation – Tête Rouge 360 SL comprises 360 g/L of Glyphosate in the form of a Soluble Liquid (SL) and is intended as a complete systemic herbicide for controlling the growth of annual and perennial weeds in various crops and non-agricultural landscapes. It penetrates into the plant through the leaves and moves in the plant body to completely kill it from the roots.
Targeted Crops and Concentration:
Rice, Maize, Cotton, and Vegetable Crops – Apply 4 liters per hectare three weeks before sowing/planting to eliminate weeds and prepare a clean seedbed for rice, maize, cotton, and vegetable crops.
Oil Palm, Rubber (Hevea), Cocoa, and Coffee Plantations – For oil palm, rubber, cocoa, and coffee plantations, use 4 liters per hectare as a directed spray to control weeds without damaging the main crop, allowing the plant to grow freely with no competition.
Non-Agricultural Areas (Roadsides, Industrial Sites, Uncultivated Lands) – For non-agricultural uses, 4 liters per hectare clears the areas of unwanted vegetation, keeping the environment clean and manageable.
Pre-Harvest Waiting Period – Maintaining a waiting period before harvest of thirty days since treatment, maximum efficacy and safety are ensured.
Topextra – 2,4-D Amine Salt
A selective herbicide for use on cereal crops, maize, and turf against broadleaf weeds. It is a synthetic analog of naturally occurring plant hormones, and it stimulates uncontrolled growth of the affected weeds, leading to their demise.
Formulation – TOPEXTRA 720 SL comprises 720 kg active ingredient per litre of 2,4-D Amine Salt and is intended to be used as a selective systemic herbicide for the control of broadleaf weeds in rice, maize, and sugarcane crops.
Targeted crops and concentration:
Rice – Use 1 litre per hectare or 50 ml for 500 m², 10-15 days after sowing or transplanting.
Maize – Use 1.5 litres per hectare or 50 – 75 ml for 500 m², 10-15 days after sowing.
Sugarcane – Use 2 litres per hectare, 100 ml for 500 m², 2-3 weeks after cutting.
Triclopyr + Propanil, 432 EC
Effective against a variety of broadleaf and grassy weeds, particularly in rice. It disrupts plant growth by mimicking auxin, while Propanil inhibits photosynthesis in susceptible weed species.
Formulation – Baraka 432 EC is an emulsifiable concentrate with 360 g/L of Propanil and 72 g/L of Triclopyr, and is intended to act as a selective post-emergence herbicide for the control of broadleaf weeds and grasses in rice. The herbicide acts by contact and systemic action, inhibiting photosynthesis and killing the weeds later on.
Targeted Crops and Concentration:
Rainfed Rice – Rate of application is 4 litres per hectare or 200 ml per sprayer, treating 500 m², in the interval of 15 to 21 days after sowing or transplanting when weeds have emerged. The spray must cover the foliage thoroughly for effective control.
Irrigated Rice – Apply 4 litres per hectare or 200 ml per sprayer, treating 500 m², is the recommended application rate in 15 to 21 days after sowing or transplanting. Approximately 2 days after spraying, water the plants to enhance the action of the herbicide.
Pre-Harvest Waiting Period – Allow a 14-day pre-harvest waiting period between the last application and harvest to allow the dissipation of maximum residues and safety to the crops.
Pendimethalin, 330, 500, EC, 455 CS
A pre-emergent herbicide used for grass control foil against annual grasses and certain broadleaf weeds in crops such as soybeans, cotton, and vegetables by inhibition of cell division and elongation of weed seedlings that have emerged.
Formulation – PENDITOP+ 455 CS is a selective pre-emergence or early post-emergence herbicide that controls broadleaf and grassy weeds in sugarcane cultivation, containing 455 g/L Pendimethalin in Capsule Suspension (CS) form.
Targeted Crops and Concentration:
Sugarcane – Apply 3 to 4 litres per hectare in 2 stages.
In the Pre-emergence stage: Apply directly after sowing and prior to the emergence of weeds.
In the Early post-emergence: When weeds are already in early growth to prevent their development further.
Atrazine, 80 WP, 80 SC, 50 SC
It is a selective herbicide for sugarcane and maize; it interferes with photosynthesis in susceptible plant species, allowing control of many broadleaf and grassy weed species.
Formulation – Toprazine 500 contains 500 g/L of Atrazine in SC (Suspension Concentrate) formulation, with which pre-emergence and post-emergence control of annual broadleaf and annual grass weeds may be attained in corn, sorghum, sugar canes, pineapples, and prairie crops.
Targeted Crops and concentration-
Maize – Apply 4 to 5 litres per hectare in pre-emergence spray or while weeds are still in early growth stages in corn (maize).
Sorghum – For effective control of weeds apply 4 to 5 litres per hectare in sorghum.
Sugarcanes – Depending on the density of weeds, apply 4 to 6 litres or more per hectare in sugarcane.
Pineapples and prairies – In pineapples and prairies. apply according to local recommendations in controlling annual weeds.
Metsulfuron Methyl, 20% WP
Metsulfuron Methyl is a systemic herbicide operating at low rates of application and controlling broadleaf weeds in cereal crops. The substance destroys the ALS enzyme activity that plays a vital role in making essential amino acids that promote plant development.

Application Methods: Maximizing Efficacy
The effectiveness of herbicides largely depends on their correct application. Common methods include:
Pre-Emergent Application
The process of Pre-Emergent Application requires herbicide treatment of the soil before weed emergence to stop germination and rooting.
Post-Emergent Application
Post-Emergent Application requires applying herbicides to fully grown weed leaves as a way to eliminate or suppress their growth.
Selective Application
The selective application method involves choosing particular weed species that affect crops through the use of selective herbicides.
Non-Selective Application
Non-Selective Application involves using herbicides that eradicate all existing plant life in treated areas, primarily used for site preparation and industrial weed control.
Deciding which herbicide to use depends on the combination of weed type, farmed crop, and environmental conditions.
